So it’s been another tumultuous week in Welsh rugby. After a seemingly unintended leak, the Welsh Rugby Union finally announced that its board had taken the decision to sell our club to Y11 Sport and Media following what it described as ‘a rigorous open bidding process’.
Most of the CF10 board were able to attend a meeting that was called at very short notice with Abi Tierney, Scott Waddington and Jamie Muir on Thursday to be briefed on the announcement ahead of its public release. They were able to pose a series of challenging questions to the WRU CEO and secured her commitment to address a public supporter meeting with representatives of Y11 as soon as this was practically possible given the constraints of the legal process now underway.
We also held a very well-attended meeting for our members that evening which was an impassioned affair and generated a broader series of questions that we are now in the process of collating and will send to Abi with the expectation of receiving a full response. The attitude of the meeting was clear. While there was a general relief in the fact that we had been given assurances over a number of key areas, the overall lack of detail in the public domain regarding Y11’s intentions was a major concern. There was also a palpable feeling of sympathy and support for our fellow fans at the Ospreys at this time of continued uncertainty.
Our indefatigable chair Lynn has been very prominent across all Welsh media channels and was also part of the Joint Supporter’s Group that appeared in front of the Welsh Affairs Committee on Wednesday. Despite Richard Collier-Keywood confidently stating that he felt had the backing of supporters, the Committee felt otherwise stating that ‘There seems to be an immense disconnect between the WRU and fans.’ All four supporter representatives did Welsh rugby proud.
This is a very fast-moving situation – indeed the desire to tie up the Cardiff deal appears to be taking place with indecent haste. CF10 is a member organisation and will take its steer going forward from our very committed supporters – so expect a flurry of activity in coming weeks. It is really important that as many people join us so that our voice is strong at this challenging time. Please do become a member and get behind us and your club. You can do so here – https://cf10rugbytrust.org/join-us/ – for only one pound! Get your supporter friends to do so as well!!
